SFO / OAK from the Airport Project - Full Image

The Airport Project is a collaborative series by Jennifer Starkweather and Amanda Hughen completed in 2009. In a series of six prints, the artists isolate and overlap forms and patterns based on seven U.S. airports. To create each work, Starkweather drew with ink, graphite and gouache to articulate the individual routes of airlines that originate from each airport. Hughen created solid color shapes based on the runways and highways surrounding each airport.

In their collaborations, Jennifer Starkweather and Amanda Hughen create artworks that explore the layers, complexities, and patterns that comprise a specific place. They use current and historic information - photographs, maps, and data - to research a location. The resulting artworks map unique forms and patterns derived from built systems and natural movements of a place.
